O.117. The author was obviously highly proficient in his art and his recipes are meticulous "do not leave the oven one minute, when you think it is near baked enough" and was, at one time, offered £1000 to withdraw his work from the public in order to protect his fellow confectioners who were fearful of losing business to those who might rival them having learnt their art through this work. £225.00

Hardback, 8vo. 272pp. colour photography by Kristin Perers a fine, near mint copy in likewise wrapper, lovely endpaper illustrations of the bakery in the morning and, at the end, in the evening. Clare Patak worked as pastry chef for Alice Waters at Chez Panisse so it goes without saying that her knowledge of the subject is first class and this shines through on every page with an utterly delicious collection of recipes for scones and muffins, biscuits and cakes, puddings, icings, jams and jellies. £20.00

Hardback, tall crown 8vo. soft green cloth, frontispiece portrait of the Earl of Sandwich, xii, 260pp. unused blanks, 8pp. publisher’s list, 15 b/w photographic plates, name on rear paste-down, covers a little worn at edges, contents v.g. Written for the restaurant, cafe, tea-room trade the choice of dishes is huge especially in the sandwich section. These are, in the main, elaborate with many of them needing cutlery which, of course, defeats the object of being able to eat “a slice of meat tucked between two pieces of bread’. £22.00
